I did something last night that I haven't done in I don't know how long: since at least before I started seeing Gavan which was, what? Five years ago?
Colleen Delany, Jay O'Berski, Jim Critchfield and I went dancing at Lava Lounge - and it was 80's Night! My body's got quite the ache on today, but in a good way. I had just enough beer to loosen me up and get me going, but not enough that I particularly regretted it this morning, which is great for me. As I've told people before, I have a wary relationship with alcohol. There are a couple of alcoholics in my family, and in truth, though I don't have a problem with alcohol, I don't think I ever learned that you don't drink alcohol in the same way you drink, for instance, Pepsi. With me, everything liquid gets quaffed if I'm not paying very close attention.
So I tend to go easy.
I had a wonderful time hanging out with Jay & Colleen & Jim, and we were eventually joined by Jay's girlfriend, Lissa Brennan. I'd forgotten how much fun just dancing with a group of friends could be. I tend to have very low opinions of bars and dance clubs in general, as I tend to find them intimidating meat markets; but I'd forgotten just how much fun you can have when in the company of friends.
We had our photo call the other night, and I think I got a couple of good pictures. Every time I try to use this camera, I learn about its limitations - or my limitations as a photographer. I'm looking forward to getting back to New York and making some money so I can treat myself to a better camera and some photography classes.
Granted, it's a little difficult to be the photographer and the subject, but for the most part, I think I have tons to learn about cameras - although I think I rate pretty well along with most other dilettantes at composition. Then again, I might just be totally full of shit!
The photo above is of me and Caitlin at the end of the first act - the play's actually three acts, but we take one intermission after the end of Friel's second act. Caitlin plays my older sister, and we've all been joking about how none of us siblings look alike (Colleen and Tessa Klein play my other sisters), but I was weirded out when I saw the color of our hair under the lights on stage - it's almost the same! Except, of course, where my gray is shining through on the sides.
This next one isn't one of my best, but it's one of my favorites, 'cuz it's got two of my favorite people in it in one of my favorite scenes from the play. Eamon (Jay) and Alice (Colleen) are stumbling toward reconciliation in a scene on the lawn, and the two of them do it so nicely that you ache for them to make it right. God, but it's great to be able to work with good actors. I think I'm actually pretty blessed that way, 'cuz I think I count on one hand the number of times I've really had to work with bad actors, and that's saying something since I've been doing this for nearly 20 years. But this group is especially talented, and it's unusual to find such consistency in a large cast.
