Adam!
I think I may have offended my nice boss today. I was sitting there, happily working away and this at-first-glance-stunningly-attractive guy walked up to one of my co-workers to give her something. I did what must have been a triple-take and stared at him, just agog.
So my boss IMs me and says something along the lines of "That's your type, huh? We'll do just fine as friends," meaning, I think, that we would never be fighting over guys. So I replied with something like, "Not generally, but you have to give credit where credit's due. Besides, I've seen your boyfriend, and I already knew we'd be fine as friends." Which I think he thinks I meant to mean that his boyfriend wasn't attractive.
You know, for a pretty smart guy, I'm remarkably dumb.
So, first of all: A big Happy Birthday to my friend Adam Robertson, owner of the inimitable and fantastic Total Wine Bar!
I just got back from a wonderful gathering at the bar where many of his friends came together to celebrate Adam. It was really quite wonderful, and reminded me of last year's Summer of Joe celebrations for my 40th birthday.
What an astounding and wonderful thing it is to be surrounded by friends who love you. And it's a bit of a mystery too, in a way. 'Cuz really, who knows what it takes to have a cabal of true friends? I'm beginning to suspect it's something over which we don't exercise a lot of control.
I think the number (or, if you're not going for numbers, but the quality) of friends you possess has a lot to do with the energy, the sincerity, the goodness you put out into the world. Adam must be a nuclear reactor of sincerity, goodness and positive energy, judging by the people who flocked to the bar to wish him a happy birthday.
Happy Birthday, Adam.
