Ashes, Ashes...

I was coming into work today and saw one of my co-workers with a big smear of ash on his forehead, and only then did I realize that it was Ash Wednesday.  Yesterday was Fat Tuesday, and I spent it at work, and sitting on my ass at home!

Granted, I had a pretty good reason.  I rode my bike to work yesterday for the first time since, I'm guessing, early December?  Over two months.  The weather forecast had been for a clear morning, followed by about an hour or two of light flurries, and a clear afternoon.  Well, let me tell you, they got that wrong.  I biked in relatively clear weather, but once I got to work and locked up my bike, the snow started, and it didn't stop until about 10 p.m. last night.  I had to ride home in a swirling snow.  That in itself wasn't so bad -- the snow wasn't falling that heavily; it was actually kinda pleasant.  The problem, for me, was that a day's worth of light snow on ground that wasn't already frozen (or even particularly cold) had created a sloppy mess that left me completely soaked through and a muddy catastrophe by the time I got home.  Hateful!

So.  That's my bitch.

I posted the picture to the right because I just needed a little reminder of what it's like to actually sit in the sun and soak it up.  It's been a while, friends, and I'm about ready for winter to be well and truly done.  Luckily, my experience of March here in NYC is that you get a nice little mix of faux spring and the last holdouts of winter.  I just realized that I took that picture in June of 2002... boy, was I fleshy then.  Not that I'm not now, but still.

I rode my bike into work again today, and man did that wear me out.  I think my back brakes are rubbing, so I was fighting that the whole way, too.    I think I may have over done it.  I've been a wreck all day, and got nothing done at work.  Just for shits & giggles, I snapped a pic at work 'cuz I wanted to put a more recent one online, and I was horrified to discover that I looked like ass!

I need to get a lot more sleep.  Then again, I'm beginning to believe that all the sleep in the world wouldn't repair the wreck I've made of my poor face since moving into the new place.  Maybe I need a new bed?  It's something I've gotta give some serious thought.

So I have plans tonight to go to dinner with my lovely co-worker, Holly.  She's the crazywoman who walked home with me after the blackout last August.  It's hard to believe it's been, like, six months since we did that six mile trek home to Park Slope... and that was the genesis of my thoughts about biking to work.  I remember thinking, even as my feet were killing me (I so wasn't wearing the right shoes for that walk) that it would be a lovely bike ride.  I think I started a couple weeks later.  So I guess I've been doing the biking thing for nearly six months!  Well, less the time off I took because of the hateful snow and ice during December and January.

Oh, and did I tell you that I managed to forget my freakin' wallet when I left the house today?  That made getting into the building this morning very interesting, let me tell you.  Not to mention buying lunch.
