I'm Not Where You Think I Am

It's 9:30 a.m. and I'm at Jennerstown, having spent the night with Janet and Doug, and seeing Mountain Playhouse's production of Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat®.  I had a delightful time watching the show which, as I told Janet & Doug last night, was the singularly most gay thing I've ever seen in my life.  I can't imagine the audiences at the theater have even the tiniest idea of just how punk'd they were.  That thing was gayer than gay porn!  But it was a hoot, and Janet was great as The Narrator.  And Doug and Nick Ruggeri, Tom Schaller, and Wayne Schroeder were absolutely hilarious as the older of Joseph's brothers.  And the director imported a bevy of young chorus boy types to play the younger brothers -- and I've never seen such high-flying crazy-dancing brothers.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

I had a wee bit too much to drink at the opening night party, but still had a really wonderful time.  I didn't get to spend as much time with Janet as I'd have liked, 'cuz her parents were in town for the show, and she was tending to them.  I did get to meet her mother, who was very charming.

I got interrupted, as Janet woke up and joined me.  We sat in the yard while she had her coffee and Wheaties and talked about the show.  I can't tell you how great I thought she was, though in truth she was struggling against some pretty bad sound design.  As I often do when I see musicals, I thought the band was mixed too heavily, and the singers were fighting it.  Still, she and the rest of the cast manage to rise above it.

So, the reviews of Stones came out over the past couple of days, and they're pretty favorable, which will hopefully sell more tickets!  There was one in the Post Gazette and one in the Tribune Review.
