Big Hair
Atticus and I were out for his evening constitutional the other night, and as we were sniffing our way along the sidewalk, searching for just the perfect place to transact our business, a car came to a screeching halt on Prospect Place, intent on grabbing the last available parking space on the block.
I was momentarily alarmed for the puppy's safety, but my concern was arrested almost immediately when I saw the passenger in the car that was backing (at, still, an alarming rate) into this open parking space.
"Geez," I thought to myself, "that old lady's perm is really tight and kinda ugly."
That's when I realized that it wasn't an old lady seatbelted into the front seat of the car.

I'm Too Busy For You
Now that I'm in a relationship, I don't have time to blog at you people as often as I might once have.
I do not regret this, for, like most people who dump their friends after they're in a relationship, I am consumed by the man in my life. I am, in fact, slavishly devoted to him.
It doesn't matter that he uses me and sucks up all my money. It doesn't matter that he always lets me buy dinner. It doesn't matter that he spends all his time hanging out with his friends (who are, by the way, smelly and dirty, and slobber a lot).
None of this matters, for I am in love. I am hopelessly devoted.

Who'll Stop the Rain?
Today Atticus got his first taste of rain.
It rained pretty hard the day he arrived, but he was in his crate, and as it turned out, only Topher, Betty Boop and I were soaked like drowned rats. He stayed in his crate all the way home from the airport, snug and, for the most part, dry.
This week, however, New York is being hit with mondo rain, and so yesterday, for the first time ever, the little man had to go outside in a downpour to do his business.
He was not pleased.
We returned from our walk last night drenched; I had to hold him in the hallway while I got a towel and dried him.
So this morning, with the rain still falling, it wasn't a big surprise when he was reluctant to go outside.
We had a brief scare when he woke me up at 5 a.m., gagging on the squeaky thingie he'd extracted from a toy he'd been given. So since we were up, I decided we should do our morning walk.
We walked out of the apartment building and he hesitated on the stop step, staring at me. For all the world, it looked like he was I tried, at first, to coax him down onto the sidewalk with my dulcet tones ("Come on, boy. It's okay. You can do it."), but ultimately had to resort to firm but gentle tugging on his leash and harness to coax him down.
We spent ten minutes walking up and down the block, him looking miserable, and me trying to watch for Ninja peeing without freaking him out.
No luck.
So I took him back to the apartment building, expecting we'd have another go at it after he'd been fed and watered for the morning.
It was only as I was pulling out my keys to let us back in that I realized there was a huge puddle of pee on the top step of our stoop. Atticus had done his business under the shelter of our stoop. I just hadn't noticed, and dragged him off into the foul weather.
Sorry about that, Atticus.

Oh, the Humanity.
As I was ascending the stairs to street level from the 59th Street
stop, I think the fellow commuter directly in front on me farted in my face.
That's gotta be karmic payback for something.

The Subculture.
So, apparently, from, like, 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. on any given day, you're allowed to let your dog off the leash in Prospect Park.
The Elf and Sunshine actually clued me into this, and introduced Atticus and me to the assorted folks who take advantage of this little boon.
So, painfully early on Saturday morning, we gathered our little gaggle of dogs and walked to the park.
It's a little bit amazing to me how many people congregate on the Long Meadow to let their dogs run wild. There had to be almost a hundred people scattered over the Long Meadow, all with one or two dogs. It was like a big social gathering.
Atticus had such a good time getting to know all the other Brooklyn dogs, we went back again on Sunday morning, and this time I took my camera.
The folks who congregate there are really quite cool, at least those I've met. And their dogs are, to a man (so to speak), adorable. The best part is that just as Atticus is being forced to meet all sorts of new "people," so am I.

Re. Markable.
I'd heard about this, but I hadn't seen it until today. I think it's an amazing and beautiful thing. And it kinda makes me teary-eyed.
