Sticking It Out

Tuscany again, having just come from my Aunt Barb & Uncle Jack's 50th Wedding Anniversary mass. This is the second one of these parties I've had to miss 'cuz I was doing some damn show somewhere. I had to miss my own parents 50th anniversary party 'cuz I was doing Mystery of Irma Vep at the time, and the City Theater didn't do understudies... at least on that show. But my mom was very forgiving, since I made the mass, which was what she really cared about. She's religious that way.

The idea of two people sticking together for fifty years is pretty amazing to me - for any number of reasons, not the least of which is that I'm aware of what a struggle it was to keep things fresh and new with Gavan after only four years; and clearly we failed at that.

So the presence of people like my mother and father (who just completed 52 years in April) and my aunt and uncle, and the two or three gay couples I know who've been together for a long time (some for as long as the dizzying - to me - length of 20 or 25 years) are reason to give me hope.

And sometimes hope is a the only thing that gets you through times where you're convinced you're going to be alone for the rest of your life.
